Art You Eat From

The story behind Layla's Mosaic — and why mosque tilework belongs on your table.

The Art

Walk into any historic mosque in Damascus, Istanbul, or Cordoba, and look up. The walls hold some of the most intricate geometric art ever made — cobalt, teal, and gold tiles arranged in patterns that have told stories of faith and beauty for over a thousand years.

That tilework has lived on walls and ceilings for centuries. We wanted to bring it to the table.

The Bowl

Every Layla's Mosaic piece is a two-part ceramic work.

The top is a functional, food-safe bowl — glazed, fired, and certified for everyday eating and serving. It's built for iftar dinners, holiday gatherings, Sunday mornings, and weeknight meals with family.

The bottom is a decorative pedestal base wrapped in hand-applied mosaic tilework. Small colored ceramic tiles are arranged one by one in geometric patterns drawn from historic mosque architecture — then sealed for durability and protected for years of use.

Together, they make something you can eat from, display on a shelf, and give as a gift that people actually keep.

The Craft

Our bowls are manufactured in Chaozhou, China — one of the world's oldest and most respected ceramics production regions. Each piece goes through a multi-step process: ceramic body forming, bisque firing, food-safe glaze application, glaze firing, hand-applied mosaic tilework, sealing, and quality inspection.

Every bowl is checked for mosaic adhesion, color consistency, food safety, and sharp edge control before it leaves the workshop.

The Name

Layla means "night" in Arabic — the time when families gather, stories are shared, and tables are set with care. It felt right for a brand built around the objects you gather around.
